Fiery Dragons: Chinese Communities in Central and Eastern Europe, with Special Focus on Hungary and Romania

Religions & Christianity in Today`s China, Vol. I, 2011, No. 1

This article highlights some of the importantdimensions of Chinese migration: unpredictability, tensions, trade, prosperity, and spiritual/religious dimensions. It offers a general and short descriptionof Chinese migration to Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) with a special focuson Hungary and Romania. The article pleads for attention to the human dimensionwithin the migration processes discussed here. In order to shape space for thehuman dimension, the present paper introduces the case of the Chinese Christiancommunities in CEE and their significance in shaping the dynamics of migrants’behaviors, community formation, and contacts with the “local” population. Themain argument of the presentation is that the globalization of Chinesemigration and the globalization of Chinese Christianity go hand in hand andthat the latter influences to a high degree the shape of what is calledcontemporary world Christianity.
