AEPF Coordination

The Asia Europe People’s Forum is an interregional network of European and Asian civil society organisations, connecting NGOs and social movements in both regions since 1996. At the heart of the network is organising an alternative forum (AEPF), held parallel to the biennial ASEM conference of Asian and European governments. Following AEPF9 2012 in Vientiane (Laos), AEPF10 was held in Milan in October 2014. AEPF is structured by an International Organising Committee (IOC) and two so called “Focal Points”, responsible for coordinating Asian and European activities respectively.

During the summer of 2015, Stiftung Asienhaus, a member of the IOC, became the European coordinator of AEPF activities, supported by Andy Rutherford of UK’s Fresh Eyes and Kalle Sysikasi of the Finnish AEPF Committee, and succeeding the Transnational Institute as the European Focal Point. Asienhaus is closely cooperating with Asian member organisations to coordinate activities. The Focal Point’s task is to strengthen the network of its Asian and European members, as well as the planning and organisation of events. This included organising AEPF11 with Conny an Heemstra as coordinator, which took place from July 4 to 6 2016 in Ulaan Baatar, the capital of Mongolia.

The Asian Focal Point is ‘Indonesia for Global Justice’ with Riza Damanik as the coordinator, supported by Maris de la Cruz (Institute for Popular Democracy, Manila), Tina Ebro (Network for Transformative Social Protection, Manila) and Charles Santiago (Monitoring Sustainability of Globalisation, Malaysia).
