SUMMARY:Dragon for Sale: Social and Environmental Issues of Tourism Development
DESCRIPTION:Film screening with discussion.\n\nDragon for Sale is a docuser
ies that takes a critical perspective on the social and environmental impac
ts of investment-driven tourism in contemporary Indonesia. Focusing on Komo
do National Park—home to the rare animal Komodo dragon in Labuan Bajo, east
ern Indonesia, the film explores how plans to turn Komodo Island into a wor
ld-class tourism destination are coming at the expense of the Ata Modo, an
Indigenous community threatened with relocation from their ancestral lands.
Documenting the community’s resistance, the film highlights their deep kin
ship with the Komodo dragon as they oppose and ultimately halt the developm
ent plan, while proposing a community-based tourism model. As such, the doc
umentary aims to enrich the discussion on the intersection between conserva
tion, tourism, and indigenous cosmology in rethinking a more sustainable ap
proach to natural resource use.\n\nAfter the screening we will disucss with
Venan Haryanto who is researching this topic.\n\nThe event is organised by
Department of Southeast Asian Studies in cooperation with PPI Jerman and S
 tifttung Asienhaus
