SUMMARY:Stiftung Asienhaus asks Chinese Civil Society: What is "Digital BRI"?
DESCRIPTION:The term 'Digital Silk Road' or 'Digital Silk Road Cooperation'
, chin. 数字丝路 or 数字丝绸之路合作, has been part of the official deliverable lists s
ince the First BRI Forum in 2017. What first appeared in bilateral BRI memo
randa of understanding became streamlined into the general BRI cooperation
framework. However, what does the term actually mean and what does it entai
l for civil society organsations in BRI host countries?\n\nThe meeting of t
he Advisory Council of the Belt and Road Forum in 2021 identified 'digital'
as a separate cooperation field to promote infrastructure connectivity. Ho
wever, there is evidence to support the idea that a degree of "Digital BRI"
accompanies most BRI projects and a crucial question will be the ownership
of BRI digital infrastructures.\n\nWill the 'Digital BRI' provide connecti
vity as a public good or a government resource to control? Does the term 'D
igital BRI' imply new opportunities from the bottom-up for local communitie
s? During this 60 minute open discussion event the China Programme of Stifu
ng Asienhaus invites Chinese and Indonesian civil society organisations to
talk about their understanding of 'Digital BRI'.\n\nOur first speaker is Li
Bolun, co-founder of Diinsider in Beijing. Information on the second speak
er will follow shortly.\n\nThe event will be held in English.\n\nRegister
