The European Association for Chinese Studies represents more than 800 scholars from 36 countries, mostly in Europe, who dedicate their efforts to the understanding and promotion of China. In this Open Letter they ask for the release of Liu Xiaobo, who on December 25, 2009 was sentenced to 11 years of prison on charges of "agitation activities", namely the drafting of the Charta 08.
代表了来自36个国家，800多名学者的「欧洲汉学学会」，成员大部分来自欧洲，致力于促进欧洲对中国的了解和推广。学会现向中国国家主席胡锦涛发出此封公开信，要求中国政府立即释放刘晓波。刘晓波因起草《零八宪章》而被控「煽动颠覆国家政权罪」，于2009年12月25日被判有期徒刑11年。
