Special Economic Zones and Economic Transformation - The Case of the People`s Republic of China

Doctoral thesis, University of Constance (Germany), 251 p.

When China started to open-up SEZs at the end of the 1970s, although such special zones were used extensively all over the world, the concept was all but uncontroversial. Three aspects are important in this discussion: (1) The design of the zone which is equivalent to the selection of one policy mix; (2) The starting point of the host country: industrialised, developing or transforming; and (3) The aims of the host country`s government.
