Call for Papers: Philippine Paradox - Trending Traditionalism

Thema ist "The Philippine Paradox - Trending Traditionalism(s)".

Für eine eintägige Konferenz am Samstag, den 1. September 2018, an der Universität Zürich (Schweiz) gibt es einen Aufruf für Beiträge zum Thema "Trending Traditonalism". Die Konferenzsprache ist Englisch.

The Swiss-based groups Philippine Studies Network (PSN) and Network of Integrated Pinoys (Noi-P.) together with the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies of the University of Zurich (UZH) have the pleasure of inviting you to their upcoming conference that discusses the Philippines as it headlines with stories on violations of international laws and human rights, natural disasters, gender inequality, and the return of
political dynasties.

We welcome the submission of abstracts from a broad range of disciplines – including but not limited to social anthropology, sociology, history, political science, geography, linguistics and literature – dealing with various aspects of the current socio-political situation in the Philippines. Based on completed or ongoing research, papers should consider some of the following or related questions and themes:

- How do the inhabitants of the Philippines navigate between resurfacing forms of
traditionalism and modern life?
- How has life changed for various groups of Filipinas and Filipinos within and outside of
the Philippines under the current government?
- How have migration and the sending of remittances been affected or transformed since
the new government is in office?
- What characterizes the contrast between actual everyday life in the Philippines and the
ways the country is portrayed in the news and on social media platforms?

Our confirmed keynote speakers are sociologist Dr. Nicole Curato (University of Canberra) and writer Annette Hug (Author of Wilhelm Tell in Manila). You can find the abstracts of their keynotes on the conference website (noi-p.ch/conference); these will be accompanied by paper presentations and a roundtable discussion.
