Über den Termin

Film screening with discussion.

Dragon for Sale is a docuseries that takes a critical perspective on the social and environmental impacts of investment-driven tourism in contemporary Indonesia. Focusing on Komodo National Park—home to the rare animal Komodo dragon in Labuan Bajo, eastern Indonesia, the film explores how plans to turn Komodo Island into a world-class tourism destination are coming at the expense of the Ata Modo, an Indigenous community threatened with relocation from their ancestral lands. Documenting the community’s resistance, the film highlights their deep kinship with the Komodo dragon as they oppose and ultimately halt the development plan, while proposing a community-based tourism model. As such, the documentary aims to enrich the discussion on the intersection between conservation, tourism, and indigenous cosmology in rethinking a more sustainable approach to natural resource use.

After the screening we will disucss with Venan Haryanto who is researching this topic.

The event is organised by Department of Southeast Asian Studies in cooperation with PPI Jerman and Stifttung Asienhaus
